Military Permit Required for Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
Travelers planning to visit Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in Western Mongolia must obtain an official military border permit before entering the park. This requirement applies to all foreign visitors due to the park’s location along the Mongolia–Russia international border.
In addition, solo travel is not permitted inside Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. According to local regulations, each visiting group must be accompanied by at least one Mongolian citizen, such as a licensed guide, driver, or local tour operator.
Why the Permit Is Required
The permit system was introduced after several incidents involving independent travelers who became lost during severe snowstorms in the Altai Mountains and unintentionally crossed into Russian territory.
Because the Mongolia–Russia border in this remote region does not have continuous fencing or clearly visible boundary markers, navigation can become extremely difficult during snowfall, fog, or high mountain weather conditions.
To improve traveler safety and border security, the Ulgii Military Command implemented a mandatory security protocol requiring all foreign visitors—including trekkers, photographers, and mountaineers attempting to climb any of the Altai Tavan Bogd peaks—to travel with a Mongolian national escort.

Important Travel Tip
Because Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is one of the most remote wilderness areas in Asia, travelers are strongly advised to arrange their trip with a local tour operator familiar with the region, weather conditions, and border regulations.
Guided travel not only ensures compliance with permit requirements but also greatly improves safety while exploring the Altai Mountains, Potanin Glacier, and the lakes of Bayan-Ölgii Province.
