Mongolia is a vast and remote country with rapidly changing weather and limited infrastructure, especially outside major cities. Good preparation is essential to ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable journey.

Located between China and Russia, Mongolia is one of Asia’s last true adventure destinations. The country is three times the size of France, yet home to just over 3.4 million people, making it one of the most sparsely populated nations in the world. With an average elevation of 1,580 meters, Mongolia features dramatic landscapes including high mountain ranges, deserts, and large freshwater lakes. The country’s highest peak, Tavan Bogd Uul (4,374 m), is covered by a permanent glacier, while Lake Khuvsgul stands out as one of the region’s largest and clearest lakes. Mongolia’s climate is extreme, with long, cold winters, but it also enjoys more than 260 sunny days a year — earning its name, the “Land of the Blue Sky.”

Practical advice:
Independent travel is possible, but distances are long, roads are limited, and language barriers can make logistics difficult, particularly in Western Mongolia. For safety, efficiency, and comfort, using a professional tour operator is strongly recommended.

Traveling with Kazakh Tour LLC ensures experienced local guides, reliable vehicles, clear communication, and well-organized logistics. Our local knowledge and long-term partnerships allow you to experience Mongolia smoothly and confidently, without unnecessary risks or complications.

Traveling within Mongolia by car

You can either rent a vehicle or hire a car with driver from tour operator. We recommend to get a car with driver because infrastructure is not developed in Mongolia, therefore you can easily get lost even if you have GPS, or maps and the roadish trails can break your car unless you can fix it by yourself. Russian Vans are the most used 4 wheel drive vehicles among Mongolia, however for your comfort it is better to travel with Toyota Land Cruisers.

Hitch hiking

Cars can pick up you if you are hitch hiking, but expect to pay money. if you do not want to pay any money you should explain this at the beginning otherwise at the end of your journey you could have problem with the driver.

Horse- Camels

You may have to use horses to get from one place to another, but never plan to ride more than 5 hours a day or approximately 10-12 miles. Even if you used to ride horses, you would have a great sour on your legs and butt on the second and third days. 😉
