Our destination today is the sacred Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, home to Tuvan nomads and mountain ibex.

We will  get picked up from our hotel at 5:00am and drive almost 1 hour to get to Chinggis Khan airport to fly to western Mongolia…Ulgii, the provincial capital, landing at 8:40 local time. After breakfast in town we’ll drive 4WD Land Cruisers heading to the most remote area, Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain in the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Most of the drive will be along the Tsagaan Gol, or the Yak milk river valley. The drive is going to be long but smooth and beautiful to our campsite. We stop along the way to take in the dramatic landscape and have  opportunities to photograph. (BLD- Breakfast Lunch and Dinner)

12 SEP - DAY 2: SACRED MOUNTAIN

After breakfast we have a short trek to the largest Petroglyphs site in Central Asia. The Petroglyphs date back starting from the Neolithic period (11,000 BC) to the Bronze Age (6,000 BC).  Located in a mountain valley carved out by Pleistocene (Ice Age) glaciers, the site is protected by the relative inaccessibility due to both terrain and weather. Exploring the rock carving provides exceptional documentation of the prehistoric and early historic communities, and reflects the development of human culture over the period of thousands of years in the Altai Mountains. If we are lucky, we will have ibex sightings up close. Shiveet Khairkhan is home to a little over 300 mountain ibex

After lunch at our camp, we drive a little further to a stunning spot to view the magnificent Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain peaks followed by a visit to animist Tuvan nomad families, the smallest ethnic minority within Mongolia. Over tea, we’ll discuss about their culture and way of life. Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain is considered sacred by Tuvans.

We head to our campsite to relax and refresh. In the early evening we gather around the bonfire with one of the last of the Tuvan Shamans and join in an intimate shamanic ritual at the campsite. (BLD)

13 SEP - DAY 3: SNAKE VALLEY

We depart early and drive following the Tsagaan Gol (White River), through sandy terrain and on to rocky high passes. You would notice that terrain changes by hours. We will see more trees on our drive. On the way through the Mogoit Valley (Snake valley) we will stop by an old cemetery that marks the first Kazakh migration from northern Xinjiang in Western China. We continue our drive and take a short walk  to the Turkic Balbal (human) rock and then onwards to our campsite nearby the Khovd river and Dayan crossroad close to some local families, either nomad or sedentary. (BLD)

This trip was spectacular! Dosjan from Kazakh Tours was excellent in his attention to detail in creating a unique experience, creative food given the limitations and personal cultural experience with the Kazakhs and Eagle Hunters. The landscape is stunning and vast and we were able to immerse ourselves in this beauty and the locals. The Gers were spacious, warm and inviting. Being able to hold a golden eagle topped off this wonderful experience.

Kazakh Tours is a first-class operation. Every detail of our trip to see the eagle hunters of western Mongolia was carefully planned, and the experience was one of the most enjoyably memorable I have ever had. Dosjan is highly knowledgeable, easy going, and great fun to be with, and his staff are competent and devoted. The food was excellent, the gers where we stayed were wonderful, and the pacing of the trip was just right.

Our trip with Thomas to Mongolia exceeded all our expectations.  The trip started with a few days in Ulaanbaatar, a city that Thomas knew well, and he shared with us.  There we met Dosjan, our local guide who had excellent logistics including a fleet of modern Land Cruisers with talented safe drivers and guides.  We appreciated that we were never more than 4 people per vehicle, making the long drives very comfortable.   Soon, we were high in the Altai mountains experiencing the last nomadic culture in the planet. Dosjan’s local contacts were key to make us experience the culture and people in a very intimate way. Thomas always added a valuable historic and cultural perspective only possible to gain from someone who has lived in Asia for 40 years. The trip was varied, and we enjoyed the majestic landscapes, the hikes, the horseback riding, and of course, the Golden Eagles! Visiting the eagle hunters and learning from them and holding the eagles was the highlight of the trip! Thank you, Thomas, and Dosjan for a trip that we will never forget!  Andy Newman and Alicia Villamarin

My trip to Mongolia last year was an amazing adventure. Our guides were well informed, flexible  and attentive to everyone’s needs.
From delicious meals, morning yoga and hikes, to fun filled days with new great people…. all made for a memorable vacation.
I strongly recommend this trip!
Best regards,

Going to Mongolia was a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience! Starting off in Ulaanbatar and learning the history of the country set us up for a great rest of the trip. Traveling through the Alti mountains- experiencing the Mongolian nomad life as well as being apart of the stunning topography was eye opening and beautiful. The golden eagle festival was a super interesting and fun part of the trip. Getting to hold the golden eagles was a bonus and maybe one of the coolest things I have done! Dosjan and Thomas put together an amazing trip that is worth the 12+ hour flight:) Thank you Thomas and Dosjan!
