Coming Soon: Reindeer People and Mongolian Winter Adventure Tour

There are journeys that show you a new place—and journeys that change the way you see the world.
Coming soon to Kazakh Tour is an extraordinary 11-day Reindeer People and Mongolian Winter Adventure Tour, created for travelers who want to go far beyond the usual sightseeing routes.
This expedition crosses the snowy heart of Mongolia, from the history and energy of Ulaanbaatar to the silent forests of the northern taiga. Here, one of the world's smallest reindeer-herding communities continues a remarkable relationship with the land and its animals.
Along the way, you will ride a camel beside winter sand dunes, explore the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, travel by 4x4 through vast wilderness, meet reindeer-herding families, cross the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh and experience the thrill of dog sledding.
This is not simply a winter holiday. It is an adventure into the living cultures and spectacular landscapes of Mongolia.
Meet the Dukha, Mongolia's Reindeer People
In the far north of Mongolia, near Tsagaannuur and the forests of the Sayan Mountains, live the Dukha, commonly known in Mongolian as the Tsaatan. The name Tsaatan means “people with reindeer” or “those who have reindeer.”
The Dukha are Mongolia's only reindeer-herding community and the world's southernmost Indigenous reindeer herders. For generations, reindeer have been at the center of life in the taiga. They provide milk, carry people and supplies, and connect families to seasonal migration, traditional knowledge and spiritual beliefs.
Herders live in portable, teepee-like dwellings known as urts and move through the taiga according to the seasons and the needs of their animals.
Today, this culture remains alive, but it is also adapting. Climate pressures, changing livelihoods, education and contact with the wider world are all shaping life in the taiga. A respectful visit offers a rare opportunity to learn from this living culture while providing direct economic benefit to the local families who welcome travelers.
A Winter Journey Across Mongolia
The adventure begins in Ulaanbaatar, where the Kazakh Tour team will welcome you to Mongolia.
From the capital, we travel west toward Elsen Tasarkhai, often called the Mini Gobi. Here, golden sand dunes rise unexpectedly from the winter steppe, creating a striking setting for a memorable camel ride.
We then continue to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. Here, we visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia's most important historical and spiritual landmarks.
From Karakorum, the road turns north. Traveling through Murun and onward to Tsagaannuur, paved highways give way to remote tracks, frozen rivers, forested valleys and mountain horizons.
The long journey is part of the adventure. It reveals the immense scale of Mongolia and leads into places that ordinary tours rarely reach.
Into the Remote Northern Taiga
The heart of this journey is our visit to the eastern taiga, where we will meet reindeer-herding families and learn about their daily lives, animals, customs and traditions.
Surrounded by snow-covered forest and mountain wilderness, guests will have time to meet local families, see their reindeer and experience the close connection between the herders, their animals and the taiga environment.
This is an extraordinary cultural encounter and a wonderful opportunity for photography. However, the taiga is a home, not a stage. We ask every traveler to approach the experience with respect, patience and genuine curiosity—and always request permission before photographing people.
Discover Frozen Khuvsgul Lake
From the taiga, we continue to magnificent Khuvsgul Lake, one of Mongolia's greatest natural treasures.
Surrounded by mountains and forest, the frozen lake becomes a seemingly endless world of blue-white ice, crisp winter air and enormous skies. Near Khatgal, we will enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride and take time to appreciate the peaceful scenery.
It is also a remarkable setting for winter photography: horses breathing clouds into the cold air, sleds moving across the snow and distant mountains rising beyond the frozen shoreline.
Dog Sledding and the Chinggis Khan Statue
After returning to Ulaanbaatar, one final adventure awaits.
We will visit the monumental Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue before continuing into Terelj National Park. Here, you can experience the excitement of dog sledding through Mongolia's beautiful winter landscape.
A warm ger camp offers a cozy countryside retreat and a memorable conclusion to the journey.

Is This Adventure Right for You?
This tour is designed as an accessible adventure, but it is still a genuine Mongolian winter expedition.
Some driving days are long, roads can be rough and facilities in Tsagaannuur are basic. Showers are not available every night, toilets in remote areas may be simple and winter temperatures can fall well below freezing.
For travelers who arrive prepared, these challenges become part of what makes the journey unforgettable. Warm technical clothing, properly insulated winter boots, flexible expectations and a spirit of adventure are essential.
In return, you will experience places of profound silence and beauty, meet people whose lives remain closely connected to the taiga and return home with stories that could never be collected from the easy road.
Travel With Respect
The Dukha are a living community, not a relic of the past. Kazakh Tour believes that travel in the taiga should respect local decisions, protect personal dignity and contribute fairly to the families who welcome us.
We ask every guest to:
- Request permission before photographing or filming people
- Follow the guidance of local hosts and the tour guide
- Avoid touching, feeding or riding reindeer without permission
- Keep gifts and personal interactions respectful
- Leave no litter in the fragile taiga environment
- Listen first and allow genuine moments to unfold naturally
